Youth Summer Reading Program is on Beanstack

The summer reading challenge operates the same way it always has, but it has moved from paper to an online platform called Beanstack. Here are answers to frequently asked questions:

  1. How do I sign up?  
    1. Create an account at An adult can create an account for the family and list children as readers in order to have oversight of everyone’s activity.
  2. Do I need a reading sheet?
    1. No. You will log your reading online either through the website or download the Beanstack app.
    2. However, if you need a low-tech method for logging, let us know.
    3. You will log minutes read, not pages or books.
  3. Then what?
    1. READ! READ! READ!
  4. How much do I have to read?
    1. For every hour you read, you will receive an online reading badge.
    2. After two hours, you will also be eligible to receive a coupon (at the library) and a drawing ticket that you can put in a drawing online.
    3. The challenge will allow you to log 14 hours of reading and receive seven coupons and seven drawing slips for reading. You can earn additional coupons and drawing slips if you complete specific activities listed on the challenge.
    4. FOR TEENS: For every three hours you read, you earn a coupon and a drawing ticket.
  5. What kind of coupons?
    1. The coupons are for activities and restaurants in the area, such as Big Backyard, Cousins Subs, Milwaukee Art Museum, Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and others. There is a complete list here.
  6.  What can I win in the drawing?
    1. Preschool pack – This reward is specifically for children up to age five and includes a puzzle with large zoo animals plus a book.
    2. Wildlife observation kit – This includes binoculars and information guides for studying the birds and animals in your neighborhood.
    3. Barnes and Noble gift card.
    4. Culver's gift card.
    5. FOR TEENS: You can enter to win a Chocolate Factory gift card or a Barnes and Noble gift card.
    6. NOTE: If you are using the app, check your badges to see if there are any drawing tickets connected to them.
  7. When does the reading challenge end?
    1. The reading challenge ends on August 14 and the drawings will take place after that.
  8. Where is the marble run? The marbles are taking a break while we establish the online program. Perhaps they will be back next year!
