Wonders of the Sky

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Wonders of the Sky is a PowerPoint presentation featuring facts about our Cosmos, from the locations of exoplanets orbiting other stars, to a truly astonishing solar-system-within-a-meter way of appreciating the distance to the nearest spiral galaxy (Andromeda). You'll also see some truly unusual video, including Mercury and Venus transiting the Sun, shot-from-space footage of the Moon revolving around the Earth, sunspots, and a comet nicknamed "Icarus." Video of the total solar eclipse of 1994 will serve as an introduction to information about how to view the Great American Eclipse of 2017. The Moon will pass in front of the Sun on August 21, with greatest partiality in Elm Grove occurring at 1:18 p.m. Presenter Ted Schaar is a writer and amateur astronomer with a lifelong interest in science. Since 2000, he has occasionally set up a telescope at local libraries for visitors to view objects such as the Sun, lunar craters, mountains, plains, and the planets Jupiter and Saturn.
